Arranging Flowers at Home
I’m so very excited for my inaugural blog post. I feel like the theme of this post and the theme of my life are one in the same. Don’t worry about how pretty something is, just finish it. One of the easiest ways to bring life and color into your home is with a bouquet of fresh flowers. I feel that often we get overly concerned with how “professional” looking the blooms are when they go from their pretty cellophane wrappers into the eagerly waiting vases.
At the same time, I’ve had this domain and blog set up for a full month with zero posts because I’ve been nervous of how unfinished things would look. My writing isn’t perfect yet, my photography is very rookie, and my web design skills are non-existent. And yet, here we are. So while you’re ogling those peonies at the farmer’s market, I hope this post comes to mind and you just go for it.
One of my favorite cheats is to just buy a bunch of long stemmed flowers, like the one below and arrange them in narrow necked vases. Whether singular or in a bunch it’s a simple way to add freshness and color to your home.
For the bunched arrangement, I decided what my shortest length should be by placing the vase on the edge of the table and holding the flower next to it. I adjust the height of the flower and make my cut when I find the right height. (Note: The flower will appear shorter in the vase because it’s not directly vertical.) From there I staggered the lengths of the other stems by about one inch each to create visual interest.
Perhaps you need more variety in your life, or you simply have a larger vase. For this arrangement I chose 3 different flowers. I knew initially I wanted my hydrangea to be the focal point so I used this flower to be the guide for my other heights using the same method above. Next I cut my spray roses to be slightly higher, and arranged the daisies to be slightly tallest of all. I then gathered them all together and slid them into the vase.
Does the finished result look professionally arranged? No. But I do have beautiful flowers to add an extra feeling of home.
